This weekend, we are supporting Brighton Backyard Ultra, and ahead of the event, we caught up with a familiar voice in the BYU community — David Patterson, better known as Patto.
Patto is the founder and host of A Backyard Ultra Podcast, where he shines a light on the runners, stories, and strategies that make this unique format so compelling.
As a runner himself and two times "assist", he knows firsthand the highs and lows of the Backyard — including recently completing 30 laps at GV, Shepparton with ambitions of one day being the Last Man Standing.
In our video interview, we dive into:
What it takes to keep going past 24 hours
The mental battles that play out on each loop
Insights into the format and its growing popularity
A look ahead to Big’s Backyard Ultra in Tennessee in October, where the world’s best gather to test the limits of human endurance
Whether you’re lining up at Brighton this weekend or just curious about what drives athletes to run lap after lap with no finish line in sight, this conversation offers a rare inside look into the mindset of a Backyard Ultra runner.
